Understanding Risks, Knowing Responses - The Endocrinology and Diabetes Committee of the Shaanxi Provincial Medical Exchange Promotion Association Conducts "United Nations Diabetes Day" Series of Activities

November 14, 2023, marked the 17th United Nations Diabetes Day. This year's theme was "Understanding Risks, Knowing Responses." To raise public awareness about diabetes, understanding risks is crucial for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Appropriate prevention and responses can help lower the risk of developing diabetes and mitigate the harm caused by complications. Under the leadership of Professor Li, Xiaofeng, the head of the Endocrinology and Diabetes Committee of the Shaanxi International Medical Exchange Promotion Association, the Shaanxi Diabetes Prevention and Control Center and the Endocrinology and Diabetes Department of Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital hosted a series of public education activities.

 

Event 1: Diabetes Free Clinic. Director Li, Xiaofeng led her team in conducting a free consultation clinic in the outpatient hall to guide the public in enhancing disease prevention awareness. The clinic was well-organized, with a steady stream of patients. Nursing volunteers provided free blood sugar and blood pressure measurements for over 120 individuals and distributed more than 150 flyers on diabetes prevention and control knowledge.

 

Associate Chief Physician Gao, Shan and other experts visited the community of the Northwest Survey and Design Institute, where they conducted free blood sugar and blood pressure measurements for over 100 individuals. They shared knowledge on healthy living and lifestyles with the public and families, effectively implementing diabetes prevention measures on the ground. This initiative received high praise from a wide range of patients, their families, and the general public!

 

Event 2: Shaanxi Medical Live Diabetes Lecture Hall. The event featured special guests, Director Li, Xiaofeng and Chief Nurse Zhang, Yan from the Endocrinology and Diabetes Department, who joined the Shaanxi Medical live broadcast room. They addressed questions on diabetes diet, self-management, and fostered healthy lifestyle habits to reduce the risk and harm of diabetes and its complications. To date, nearly 7,000 netizens have watched the live broadcast.

 

Event 3: Diabetes Public Lecture. Over 30 inpatient diabetes patients and medical staff gathered in the halls of the first and second wards of the Endocrinology Department for a health lecture, where attendees reported significant benefits. The lecture was filled with engaging content and practical advice, energizing the diabetic patients with enthusiasm and active participation. An interactive Q&A session was held, with small gifts given as encouragement. This not only heightened the patients' awareness of diabetes prevention and treatment but also effectively strengthened health management and intervention.

 

Event 4: Diabetes Science Popularization Articles and Short Video Push. The "Shaanxi Provincial Medical Exchange Promotion Association" public account, video account, "Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital" video account, and "Shaanxi Medicine Endocrinology Diabetes" WeChat public account circulated science popularization videos and articles around the theme of diabetes. These resources help the general public understand the dangers and risks associated with diabetes, and provide guidance on preventing and managing the condition.

 

Additionally, the units affiliated with the vice chairs, standing committee members, and committee members of the Endocrinology and Diabetes Committee of the Shaanxi Provincial Medical Exchange Promotion Association, such as the Affiliated Hospital of Shaanxi University of Chinese Medicine, Shaanxi Province Fourth People's Hospital, Xi'an Fourth People's Hospital, Ankang Central Hospital, Xianyang Central Hospital, Tongchuan Central Hospital, and others, also conducted a variety of activities. These included academic lectures, free consultation clinics, and public health education, further enhancing the reach and impact of diabetes awareness and education efforts across the region.

 

The "United Nations Diabetes Day" series of activities aimed to implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Healthy China initiative. The goal was to further enhance public awareness of diabetes prevention and control, improve the public's in-depth understanding of diabetes health management, and create a positive social atmosphere for community-wide diabetes prevention and collective control. Additionally, in line with the shift from a "disease-centered" approach to a "people's health-centered" approach, the emphasis was on prevention first, strengthening the integration of medical and preventive care. This initiative aimed to establish a widespread public awareness that "everyone is the primary person responsible for their own health," thereby significantly improving the public's satisfaction with health services.
