SIMEPA Sports Medicine Committee Carries Out Free Clinic and Health Education Activities for International White Cane Safety Day
On the afternoon of October 15, in celebration of the 42nd International White Cane Safety Day, the “Sports for Light: Volunteer Service Program for Weight Management in Blind Children” was held warmly at Xi’an School for the Blind and Deaf. The event was guided by the Shaanxi Association for Science and Technology, the Shaanxi Blind Persons’ Association, and the Rehabilitation Center of the Xi’an Disabled Persons’ Federation, and jointly organized by the Medical and Health Volunteer Service Team of Shaanxi Science and Technology Volunteers, the Shaanxi International Medical Exchange Promotion Association, and the Shaanxi Association of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. The event aimed to support the healthy growth of visually impaired children and promote scientific weight management.
Focusing on the health needs of blind children, the event adopted a model combining “professional medical consultation + health education,” offering holiday care and support. Experts from multiple disciplines—including nutrition and sports medicine—from the Shaanxi Blind Persons’ Association, the Rehabilitation Center of the Xi’an Disabled Persons’ Federation, Shaanxi Provincial People’s Hospital, and Xi’an Honghui Hospital participated to provide comprehensive volunteer medical services.
At the event, Guo, Zhenjun, Deputy Director from Shaanxi Provincial People’s Hospital, used clear and accessible language to introduce nutrition knowledge and autumn–winter vaccination information to the children. Through interactive Q&A sessions, he helped them build awareness of balanced diets and scientific disease prevention.
As the core force of the program, Zhang, Liang, Chair of the Sports Medicine Committee of SIMEPA and Director of the Sports Medicine Department at Xi’an Honghui Hospital, together with Dr. Liang, Qiuzhen, Secretary-General of the Committee, and rehabilitation therapist Pang, Panpan, led the team in designing engaging exercise activities tailored to the needs of blind children. Under the guidance of the experts, the children experienced the joy of physical activity while learning proper exercise techniques.
During discussions with the school, Ma, Yuzhuo, Director of the Nursing Department of Xi’an Honghui Hospital, and Liu, Jie, Vice Principal of the school, noted that this event represents an innovative practice in addressing the health needs of special populations and expanding public education efforts. It not only conveyed health concepts but also planted seeds of hope. As the event highlighted, caring for special groups requires both professional expertise and heartfelt compassion.
The three-hour volunteer event concluded in a warm and supportive atmosphere. The children gained practical health knowledge and truly felt the care from various sectors of society. Moving forward, the Sports Medicine Committee of SIMEPA will continue to leverage its professional strengths, integrate medical resources, and transform medical knowledge into accessible health education. It will carry out more care-based initiatives for special populations and contribute to the construction of a “Healthy Shaanxi.”
