Frontiers and Innovation in Ophthalmology: SIMEPA Ophthalmology Frontiers and Innovation Conference and the Fifth Tangdu Ophthalmology Academic Conference Successfully Held

Recently, the SIMEPA Ophthalmology Frontiers and Innovation Conference and the Fifth Tangdu Ophthalmology Academic Conference, organized by the Shaanxi International Medical Exchange Promotion Association (SIMEPA) and hosted by Tangdu Hospital of the Air Force Medical University, was successfully held in Xi'an. Centered on the theme "Frontiers and Innovation in Ophthalmology," the conference brought together leading ophthalmologists and researchers from across China to discuss the latest advances in ophthalmic subspecialties, technological innovation, and clinical applications. Through in-depth academic exchange and discussion, the meeting injected new momentum into the development of ophthalmology.

Professor Chen Zhao, President of SIMEPA, and Professor Wang Jingbo, President of Tangdu Hospital, delivered opening remarks. Professor Han Jing, Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Tangdu Hospital, served as Conference Chair and presided over the opening ceremony. Ophthalmologists from across Shaanxi Province and beyond gathered to exchange academic insights and discuss the future development of the specialty.

Professor Han noted that since its inception, the Tangdu Ophthalmology Academic Conference has remained committed to academic excellence and has grown into one of the most influential ophthalmology conferences in the region. She emphasized that this year's conference not only builds upon the achievements of previous meetings but also marks a new stage of academic advancement. Tangdu Ophthalmology will continue to establish a higher-level platform for academic exchange, bring together cutting-edge expertise, address challenging clinical issues, and promote further progress in ophthalmic clinical practice and scientific research in western China.

Five Thematic Sessions Highlighted Emerging Advances and Clinical Innovation

The conference featured five thematic sessions: Vision Leadership, Exploring Ocular Science, Future Vision, Clinical Excellence, and Next-Generation Research. Covering multiple ophthalmic subspecialties—including retinal diseases, corneal diseases, and cataracts—the program showcased the latest scientific and clinical developments across the field.

Renowned experts, including Professor Zhang Mingzhi from the Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Jin Zibing from Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, and Professor Chen Changzheng from Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, delivered keynote presentations that combined cutting-edge research with practical clinical applications.

The Vision Leadership session focused on emerging technologies and pediatric ophthalmology, highlighting innovative applications such as artificial intelligence-assisted surgery and stem cell therapy.

The Exploring Ocular Science session emphasized fundamental clinical research and evidence-based management of complex ophthalmic diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, corneal disorders, and orbital deformities.

The Future Vision session introduced innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), thyroid eye disease, and other challenging ophthalmic conditions.

The Clinical Excellence session featured discussions on advanced surgical techniques, including retinal detachment surgery, three-dimensional digital navigation-assisted surgery, and the management of complex clinical cases.

The Next-Generation Research session was dedicated to multidisciplinary discussions of difficult clinical cases. Physicians from multiple institutions presented representative cases, while expert panelists provided comprehensive analyses and practical recommendations. The lively discussions reflected strong academic engagement among participants.

Each session included interactive question-and-answer discussions, encouraging active participation and facilitating the translation of the latest research findings into clinical practice.

Wet Lab Training Strengthened Practical Surgical Skills

In addition to the academic program, the conference organized a Wet Lab training course to enhance participants' surgical skills. Professor Wang Ping, Dr. Cheng Qilin, and other faculty members from the Department of Ophthalmology at Tangdu Hospital provided systematic instruction and live demonstrations on the operation of surgical microscopes, vitreoretinal surgical equipment, and phacoemulsification systems. Participants also received individualized, one-on-one guidance, enabling instructors to correct technical errors and reinforce standardized surgical techniques.

The hands-on training attracted enthusiastic participation and successfully achieved the dual objectives of academic exchange and clinical skills enhancement, providing valuable support for the professional development of ophthalmologists, particularly those working in primary healthcare institutions.

Advancing Ophthalmology Through Collaboration and Innovation

Following a full day of academic exchange and practical training, the conference concluded successfully. The meeting served not only as a high-level academic forum showcasing the latest developments in ophthalmology, but also as an important platform for strengthening collaboration and promoting the coordinated development of ophthalmic care in western China. In her closing remarks, Professor Han stated that while the conference had come to a successful conclusion, it also marked the beginning of a new chapter. She noted that SIMEPA and Tangdu Ophthalmology will continue to promote innovation in ophthalmic science and technology, strengthen academic collaboration, and uphold the principles of openness, academic exchange, and innovation-driven development. By establishing high-quality academic platforms and leveraging their regional leadership, they aim to enhance ophthalmic services at the primary care level and work together with colleagues across western China to improve regional eye care, ultimately contributing to the development of Healthy Shaanxi and Healthy Western China.
