The delegation from the Shaanxi International Medical Exchange Promotion Association visited the School of Health Sciences at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Canada.

Invited by the Canadian Traditional Chinese Medicine School Alliance, on the afternoon of June 14, 2023, Wang, Ning, Vice President and Secretary-General of the Shaanxi Provincial International Medical Exchange Promotion Association, led a delegation to visit and exchange ideas at the School of Health Sciences of Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Canada. Both parties engaged in broad discussions and in-depth exchanges regarding mutual learning and collaboration in the field of traditional Chinese medicine.

 

At the symposium, Dr. John Yang, Director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department and a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the School of Health Sciences, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, introduced the achievements of Kwantlen Polytechnic University in the field of traditional Chinese medicine education and research. He highlighted recent research advancements in acupuncture and herbal therapy, the current status of traditional Chinese medicine development, and the challenges posed by the development of traditional Chinese medicine overseas to Western medicine.

 

The history of traditional Chinese medicine in Canada spans over a century and a half, following the entry of Chinese immigrants and overseas Chinese. Through the tireless efforts of several generations of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, traditional Chinese medicine has taken root and developed locally, earning hard-won social recognition. As a representative of Chinese traditional culture, traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture have become indispensable components of Canada's multicultural "mosaic."

 

It is hoped that further collaboration will be deepened on the basis of previous exchanges and visits, promoting the inheritance and innovation of traditional Chinese medicine and contributing to its prosperity.

 

Secretary General Wang, Ning highlighted the distinctive and outstanding work of the Shaanxi International Medical Exchange Promotion Association in academic exchanges, international medical cooperation, and scientific research collaboration. She expressed appreciation for the efforts made by the School of Health Sciences in the development of traditional Chinese medicine over the years. With a long history and abundant resources in traditional Chinese medicine education and research, Shaanxi Province aims to further leverage the advantages and characteristics of the Shaanxi International Medical Exchange Promotion Association. This aims to promote deep cooperation between the two sides in clinical medicine, scientific research collaboration, and the overseas dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine.

 

Secretary General Wang extended a warm welcome to experts from Kwantlen Polytechnic University to visit Shaanxi for academic exchanges and visits. Such exchanges aim to promote the overseas promotion of traditional Chinese medicine, allowing more people to experience the charm and unique therapeutic effects of traditional Chinese medicine. This contributes to the inheritance and innovation of traditional Chinese medicine and makes efforts to actively promote human health.

 

Sharmen Lee, Dean of the School of Health Sciences at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, expressed gratitude to the Shaanxi International Medical Exchange Promotion Association for its efforts and contributions in facilitating bilateral exchanges. She also extended thanks for the appointment of Dr. John Yang as a visiting professor at the First Clinical College of Shaanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and as an international consultant for the Shaanxi International Medical Exchange Promotion Association. Sharmen Lee provided an overview of the basic situation of the school and highlighted its strengths in nursing, healthcare, and rehabilitation.

 

She emphasized the increasingly prominent role of traditional Chinese medicine in global healthcare and stressed the importance that Kwantlen Polytechnic University places on cooperation in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. Sharmen Lee expressed hope for the establishment of long-term partnerships with Shaanxi Province in talent cultivation, academic exchanges, scientific research, and other areas through collaboration.

 

After the symposium, the Shaanxi International Medical Exchange Promotion Association delegation visited the teaching facilities of the School of Health Sciences' Traditional Chinese Medicine department. This visit laid a solid foundation for deepening cooperation between the two parties in the field of traditional Chinese medicine and opened a new chapter in cooperation between traditional Chinese medicine and health-related fields. Both sides expressed their commitment to advancing in-depth cooperation in areas such as rehabilitation, nursing, academic exchanges in traditional Chinese medicine, international training, international diagnosis and treatment, and scientific research projects. They pledged to collaborate in building a brand for traditional Chinese medicine services and culture, contributing to the international development and popularization of traditional Chinese medicine and enhancing people's health and well-being.

 

The exchange forum was attended by Analita Nand, Finance Department Head of the School of Health Sciences at Kwantlen Polytechnic University; Yan Qu, lecturer and Ph.D. in the Traditional Chinese Medicine department; Emma Liu, President of the Shaanxi Sanqin Association of Canada; Tony Zhang, General Manager of the Canadian branch of the Sanqin Association; and Jasmine Ding, Technical Lead at the Canadian branch of Sanqin.
