The Shaanxi International Medical Exchange Promotion Association (SXIMEA) successfully hosted the academic symposium (Baoji Station) to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer and prevention of hepatitis E consensus

In recent years, cervical cancer, as a common chronic disease that plagues women’s health, has shown a rapid increase and a trend toward affecting younger ages in both incidence and mortality rates. The three-level prevention strategy for cervical cancer urgently needs to be further promoted and implemented. The incidence rate of hepatitis E has become the highest among acute viral hepatitis, and the disease burden caused by hepatitis E is becoming increasingly prominent.

To implement the ‘Action Plan to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer (2023-2030)’ jointly issued by ten departments including the National Health Commission, the Ministry of Education, and the All-China Women’s Federation, and to implement the ‘Hepatitis E Prevention and Treatment Consensus’, enhance the professional capacity of disease control institutions and vaccination units’ personnel, and improve citizens’ health literacy and public disease prevention awareness, the ‘Baoji City Symposium on Accelerating the Elimination of Cervical Cancer and Hepatitis E Prevention and Treatment Consensus’ was successfully held on March 11, 2023. The symposium was sponsored by the SXIMEA and co-organized by Xiamen Wantai Canghai Biotechnology Co., Ltd., at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Baoji City.

This conference invited several provincial and municipal-level experts to discuss strategies for the prevention and control of cervical cancer and the prevention of hepatitis E. Participants included directors, chiefs of immunization planning departments, backbone members of the immunization planning departments, heads of vaccination clinics in each district, and heads of vaccination clinics in urban areas from the Baoji City Center for Disease Control and Prevention and each district/county. The conference was presided over by Wang Ning, Vice President and Secretary-General of the SXIMEA.

At the academic symposium, several key reports were shared: Shaobai Zhang, Deputy Director of the Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, reported on ‘Vaccination for Children in Special Health States’. Xiaofei Tian, Director of the Gynecological Oncology Department II at the Provincial Cancer Hospital, discussed ‘The Three-Level Prevention and Control Strategy for Cervical Cancer’. Weijun Hu, Director of the Immunization Planning Institute of the Provincial Center for Disease Control, elaborated on ‘Vaccination Plans for Non-Immunization Program Vaccines’. Jinbao Zhang, Chief of the Immunization Planning Department of the Baoji City Center for Disease Control, spoke on ‘The Disease Burden of Hepatitis E and the Consensus on Hepatitis E Prevention and Treatment’. Xiangping Gong, Chief Physician at Baoji High-tech Hospital, analyzed ‘Hepatitis E Case Studies’. Quanying Liu, Manager of the Northwest Region of Xiamen Wantai Canghai, reported on ‘The Road to the Development of Domestic HPV Vaccines - Ethnic Self-Improvement’. These reports offered insights, policy interpretations, and case analyses.

The experts provided detailed information on the three-level prevention of cervical cancer, highlighting the importance of HPV vaccination in primary prevention of cervical cancer. They emphasized that given the trend towards younger ages for tumor onset, it’s crucial to vaccinate early, preferably before puberty. They also pointed out that the incidence of Hepatitis E is rising both domestically and abroad, with multiple sources of infection and wide transmission routes. Hepatitis E treatment is mainly supportive, and there are currently no specific drugs approved for treatment in clinical practice. The consensus recommends Hecolin, the only Hepatitis E vaccine developed independently worldwide and available on the market, as an effective prevention against Hepatitis E. The vaccine has a protection rate as high as 100% and is proven to be safe.

During the interactive Q&A session, experts and representatives focused on the theme of ‘Prevention and Treatment of Cervical Cancer and Hepatitis E’. Discussions revolved around three aspects: ‘disease’, ‘vaccine’, and ‘vaccination’. They held systematic, comprehensive, and in-depth discussions on six specific topics: two diseases (cervical cancer, prevention and treatment of Hepatitis E, and case analysis), two vaccinations (for special groups/non-immunization), and one research and development topic (domestic HPV vaccine).

This was not only a learning and discussion meeting, but also an energizing and recharging session, as well as a platform for mutual exchange, learning, unity, and cooperation to push forward our work. The beginning is related to the overall situation, and the start determines the journey ahead. Let’s unite and promote comprehensive, high-quality development in the city’s immunization planning and all aspects of disease control work, making our active contribution to the building of a healthy Baoji and a healthy Shaanxi.

At the end of the conference, Deputy Director Zhufeng Ju used a short poem to summarize the meeting: ‘Fulfilling the Heavy Trust’, carrying the heavy responsibility of health on our shoulders, preventing and controlling diseases is our priority, our practice leaves footprints throughout the West Qin, living up to expectations every day.”
